Kruger National Park in South Africa, one of the world’s first wildlife conservation areas, features terrific wildlife-viewing opportunities in both public and private reserves. Visits to Kruger often are accompanied by a stop in Johannesburg, the country’s largest city.
Along with your safari experience, head to beautiful Cape Town, the oldest European settlement in the country. Cool Atlantic Ocean waters and warm Indian Ocean waters converge at Cape Point Peninsula, resulting in diverse marine biology. You might cruise to Seal Island for an up-close view of fur seals. Or, venture into the renowned wine-producing regions just outside Cape Town.
South Africa safaris are available year-round. Game viewing in the north is best enjoyed during the dry winter from May through August, when temperatures are mild, vegetation is sparse and animals gather at water sources. Peak travel time in the southern region is during the summer months from October to March. Whales can be seen along Cape Town’s coastline from July through November.
