Situated between the Aberdare foot hills and snowcapped Mount Kenya, Sweetwaters Game Reserve is one of Kenya’s best conservation havens. An amazing variety of wildlife can be found here, including the non-indigenous chimpanzees and the “Big Five” - lions, elephants, Cape buffalos, leopards, and endangered black rhinoceroses.
One of the reserve’s main attractions is the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary. The sanctuary was established to rehabilitate and provide lifelong refuge to orphaned and abused chimpanzees rescued from the black market and it is the only place in Kenya to see this endangered and intelligent species. After they are nursed back to health, chimpanzees are introduced into one of the two large groups at the Sanctuary and spend their days in vast natural enclosures by the Ewaso Nyiro River climbing, socializing and learning to be chimpanzees all over again.
